Instant Pot Ham, Green Beans & Potatoes- A Pennsylvania Classic

Instant Pot ham, green beans & Potatoes

This Ham, Green Beans and Potatoes meal is winner for mom because it fast, easy and delicious! It is now a weekly meal staple in our house.

My husband grew up in an a Pennsylvania Dutch area in PA and ham, green bean and potatoes was one of his favorite dishes.  I learn to make it on a stove top after cooking a ham hock for hours with water, potatoes and green beans. Sometimes I just don’t have time!

I wanted to try this in my Instant Pot. I thought there would be a recipe out there on the web but had a hard time finding one about 2 years ago. I found ones although similar it involved cooking the meat first and then adding in the veggies and cooking again. I wanted it to be an all in one dump and cook meal. Hence I came up with my own quick yet still delicious recipe. It has become a quick weekly meal for us on Scout or Teakwando nights.

Ingredients

Recently we picked up some fresh green beans at the local farmers market.  This time I used a  ham slice, the thickest one I could find. I have tried this defrosted and frozen ham slice, both have come out great.  I do add in the small bone and remove in the end , it helps with flavoring your dish.  I also add some diced onion,  a little chicken broth and seasonings. You literally dump it all in and set your Instant Pot for 5-8 minutes. That is it!

Update and Thoughts

If you like your green beans more firm you might want to cook it a little less 5-6 minutes instead. Be sure you are using fresh , not frozen, green beans. I prefer to cook it for 6 minutes where the beans are softer and not to firm but not mushy.

Fresh or Frozen?

I have not made this using frozen green beans, if I do I will update this post.

 Cooking for a crowd?

I have cooked this in my 6qt  for the 3 of us as well as prepared it in my 8 qt Instant Pot for 6 people. When we have company I use 2 ham slices and 3 lbs of green beans and  few more potoato in my 8 qt, the cooking time is the same. My pot is usually filled to the top.

  1. Make sure you don’t cut your potatoes too small( if large size just quarter them, don’t make any smaller, if small cut in half). Maybe try larger cut potatoes or lowering the cooking time by 1 minute or 2.

    1. If you like your green beans and potatoes more firm try lowering the cooking time a minute or 2. Make sure to use fresh green beans as well if you didn’t.

  2. You can find ham broth which makes it better. I’ve been making this for years. Also, the Dutch make a gravy to this. Just use your broth. If you want gravy from this then take everything out of the pot. Cover to keep warm. Now put on sauté and melt some Crisco. Depends on how much you want to make. Start with a couple of TBLS. Then add some flour to make a rue. Just stir until you have a paste. Then add some of your broth that you had in the pot earlier and stir until you have the consistency you want for gravy. Pour over ham, beans and potatoes.

    1. Yes you can but I have never seen ham broth in the regular grocery store. The purpose of this recipe is my quick version of using everyday ingredients. The gravy sounds interesting though. Thanks for commenting your ideas.

  3. You keep stressing “fresh green beans” not frozen. Why? I only have frozen, couldn’t find any fresh at the store. I know you said you haven’t tried this with frozen yet, but are you thinking you have to cook more or less time?

    1. Frozen has too much liquid and there is a chance they will be limp become very mushy. You can not cook it less because the potatoes will not be cooked through. I know its hard to find hand picked fresh green beans this time of year but usually there are green giant fresh green beans pre-packaged in the produce aisle year around. Let me know if you give it a try.

  4. I’m new at the instant pot but I made this tonite. I didn’t follow instructions as far as the potatoes BUT I learned my lesson.will be making it again but with red potatoes. Was wonderful otherwise.

    1. Glad you tried it! My family loves this recipe, so easy and classic. It’s something my husband can handle cooking.

    1. I wouldn’t add cabbage until it is complete and put on saute for a few minutes. It would be too mushy if you pressure cooked cabbage.

  5. I grew up eating this.fresh veg. R so expensive now I tried 2# bag of frozen. I cooked 5-6 min. & they were mushy.i think 4 min is best.if u dont use huge potatoes they should cook fine
