Cheese Boats- Air Fryer Recipe

cheese boats

As I had posted on my Instagram the other day, where has this food been my whole life? A Georgian (Khatchapuri) cheese boat! It is making its way tonthebUS , you can now find them served in NYC. I decided I needed to try this because, well, I love cheese. Anything with cheese! It is so amazingly good and am so happy this has come into my life!

This recipe is traditionally baked in the oven but I decided to give it a try in my Air fryer.  For me I make it one at a time because my husband does not eat cheese but if you make a few  at once you can certainly cook it in your oven. My next experiment with this is to cook it in my outdoor pizza oven.

To start you make the dough first. I made mine a day ahead and placed it in the refrigerator. Cut it into quarters to make 4 cheese boats.

Roll out the dough into roughly 9″-12″ disc like a pizza then roll it up on the sides to make a boat shape.  I find placing it on a parchment paper cut to the size of your air fryer pan makes it easier to transport and lift out of the air fryer.

Mix the cheeses together and fill the center of the boat, as much as it can hold piled high.A few big heaping scoops of the yummy cheese. I haven’t tried it yet but I can imagine adding some additional toppings into the mixture like pepperoni, spinach or mushrooms would be a twist on this classic dish.

Brush the dough with the egg wash and place in your Air fryer.  Cook it at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the dough is golden brown. If you are planning on making it in the over you can cook it at 450 degrees

Then its my favorite part! As soon as the it comes out of the oven make a small well in the middle of the cheese and  crack a room temperature egg on top and a pat of butter. and place back on air fryer for 3 minutes. The egg should be whitish but still runny.  Then mix it all together with the cheese and devour. I know it sounds weird, it did for me but trust me. The egg cooks in the hot bubbly cheese. Now its time to dig in, break apart that bread and dip dip dip!

I expected this to taste like pizza without the sauce but it doesn’t, the combo of the different cheese  and egg brings this to a completely different type of dish.

Does this look amazing or what!
